The City of Greensboro's IT Department consist of approximate 50 personnel with diverse talent necessary to sustain information technology infrastructure, Geographical Information Systems, Application Development, Network Services, Enterprise Solutions, Program Management, Security and Compliance, and Telecommunications. The IT Department strives to provide leading edge technical services to support the business needs of our internal departments. We provide services using a diverse selection of secure platforms and servers, with the latest sophisticated monitoring tools to ensure the highest availability for our business needs.

Intern Responsibilities

The City of Greensboro is seeking a Data Analytics Developer to serve as an intern to the Information Technology Department. The intern must be a highly motivated self-starter who can work autonomously with all other departments within the City’s organizational structure to; (1) perform data cleaning and initial analysis of existing performance measures within respective departments and to categorize their overall effectiveness and utility to the municipality and to businesses/residents for which they are formalized to serve; (2) to work in unison with departmental representatives in the development of new metrics and measures that can be automated to feed two separate Socrata platforms (Open Data Portal) and (Open Performance); (3) ensure performance measures and metrics give a complete and transparent story of the department’s performance in relation to their specific mission and service to the public; and (4) provide expertise in the overall data presentation that can serve as a model to perform trend analysis and predictive evaluations over both short and long-term to make informed and valued governmental decisions affecting the lives of our data audience. The ideal candidate is one with highly effective communication skills and a technical background in Socrata platform tools and manipulation of data and datasets.

Please note: all Fellows will attend the Leonard Kaplan Leadership Institute at the Center for Creative Leadership on either June 11 & 12, 2018 or June 18 & 19, 2018. If hired as an intern through the Fellows Program, you will attend one of the sessions in June.

Required Qualifications:

Background of experience with quantifiable data analytics formulation and presentation; data cleaning; data structuring and visualization; knowledge of data inventory principles and best practices; knowledge of various spreadsheet formats and automation of data between them; platform federation; data manipulation; documentation skills; communication skills; attention to detail; computer familiarity; effective ability to work autonomously with minimum supervision and the ability to work with a team of cross-functional experts; and a familiarity with NC General Statues for publication of government records
